"ISMU DHANBAD"- Know it better!!!

CHECK OUT THE LATEST PICS OF ISM DHANBAD: http://picasaweb.google.com/cmanjunath316/ISMDHANBAD

1."Indian School of Mines"-isn't it a weird name for a tech. institute ??

Yes. It does seem very weird to hear. But the name has descended over a long time.The college dates back to a time which can be called history, 1926. ISM was established as a daughter branch of Royal School of Mines, London. In spite of nine different B Tech
Branches and many M Tech & M.Sc Courses(integrated as well), the traditional name is still maintained due to its rich heritage.More than the Indian perspective , ISM is bigger in the world perspective of being the best school in Asia and the second in the world for the courses offered in earth sciences.No doubt ISM wants to retain its name.

2.How is Dhanbad as a place ??

Dhanbad as a place is very safe , with an excellent climate. raining all round the summers and mild winters.And i suppose a jee qualified student must not make any fuss about the place.The people out here are really nice and ISMites are treated with utmost respect in the city.Moreover one need not go out of the college campus which is lush green and equipped with all the necessities of a student.there are patrol jeeps in the campus ready to help the students all round the night.The hostels are really good with power back up with a nescafe outlet at every hostel.i can compare the hostel to bits pilani{i've been there a couple of times} and our hostel is much much better than theirs in every respect{not trying to instill any controversy}.There are all kinds of standard refreshment outlets in the city be it a cafe coffee day or the others.As a student i would rather say -guys i suppose that you are out there to study and not to party or enjoy your night life.The city is not an issue at all with the access of two rajdhanis, and most of the Calcutta trains passing via dhanbad.

3.Does the college deserve to be compared to IIT??

Why not? ISM is one of the pioneer institutes to have existed in India ,and dominated the World for its quality and talent.,when nothing called IIT ever existed.This is a fact which is known only to ISMites and which didn't go beyond the college administration and the HRD ministry-ISM was offered the status of an IIT in the year 2000 along with Roorkee University.However roorkee became IIT Roorkee , but ISM rejected the proposal.Gesturing the rich heritage and its wide name in the world for producing the best engineers
in earth sciences, it is still ISM for you with a U, ISM University.ISM no doubt is the leader in Earth sciences, and from a decade it is now a full fledged technological institute. Tech. branches like Mech. engg, Comp. Sc Engg, Electronics Engg ,Electrical engg. , environmental engg. along with the premier Petroleum engg ,Mining engg , Mining machinery engg and mineral engg .

PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS LIKE BITS,PILANI DO IMMENSE PUBLICITY BY MEDIA ABOUT THE COLLEGE, IITS GET IT BY DEFAULT......BUT ISM DOESN'T GET INTO THESE PUBLICITY STUFF.......IT USED TO NEVER PARTICIPATE IN POLLS CONDUCTED
BY MAGAZINES UNTIL LAST YEAR WHEN IT PARTICIPATED IN OUTLOOK RANKINGS.........12TH LAST YEAR AND 9TH THIS YEAR AHEAD OF IIT GUWAHATI...NO DOUBT ONE OF THE BEST ENGG. COLLEGES OF THE COUNTRY.....AND THE BEST IN EARTH-SCIENCES IN THE WORLD...........AND HENCE DESERVES TO BE AMONGST THE IITs.

4.Are the placements really good ??

ISM is always known for its placements.There are ISMites are at the top posts of the leading multinationals like shell,schlumberger,British gas,rio tinto,sandwik,ongc etc. The branches are paid really well.Petroleum engg. is known for its placement,and is considered to be better than any branch of any IIT.The branches like mining and mechanical engg. are also amongst the well paid branches.ISM is rated 5th in outlook rankings for the placements all over.The newer budding branches are also growing well and with new companies coming up every year the placement scenario ought to reach the resonance in near future. ISM which used to be considered a mining institute ,is now a tech. institute ,and as more and more companies getting to know that ,no one will wait to pick up the top 4% of the brainy engineers the country is producing.

(..This question as well as the following answer..)

Q.Isn't it akward "Doing C.S.E,Electronics,Electrical" from a mining college?

=>

No,Not at all.The Indian School Of Mines is not isolated in its capability of issuing degrees to non "earth science" disciplines inspite of the conspicuous presence of the term "MINES" . A stunning similarity is exhibited by The "École des Mines,Paris" or "The School Of MInes,Paris" which delves into Engineering and Humanities in addition to The Earth Sciences.For those of you unaware of the credentials of this institute.The École is one of France's most elite schools boasting of some spectacular alumni in the form of High level diplomats,politicians and Nobel Laureates in the spheres of Economics and Physics.It is quite evident that if the International Community has no problem whatsoever in associating itself with such an institute then there is absolutely no scope of your degree being a centre of ridicule.It's also worthwhile noting that The École was set up primarily to serve the Mining industry and It branched into a multi disciplinary institute very later in its history.Such a move was made keeping in mind the technological progress and transformations that have taken place in mordern day society a vision which was shared by I.S.M.U during its own transformation.

So,for all those fellows out there who are being guided by various baseless,illogical and naive arguments--Get up.Get a life.You and especially your friendly neighbourhood counsellor have much to learn before they can even call themselves capable of being able to comment about an institute such as I.S.M

I have no idea of what you describe as "so many".You can always find people who criticise their own institute.I.S.M is no exception.I have met students from I.I.Ts advicing me to opt out of any non major disciplines in I.I,Ts..I didnt but others did.While some benefited others got their asses screwed big time.Its simply a function of a person's mindset.As for the other departments are concerned.Go in for a reality check..Our Course structure is as rigorous ,if not harder than any other I.I.T's(It was set in accordance with I.I.T Kanpur and I.S.I Calcutta).The Institute placements have undergone such radical change over the past two years that even Petro companies which recruit heavily from I.S.M are willing to accomodate C.S.E /Elecs/Mech.This is one such aspect which is missin from most other colleges in the country.You will also not be deprived of any other Standard Company such as Microsoft,Google or Yahoo.This , of course, also depends on your individual enterprise.Finally ,if you are ready to slog yes.........

gr8 job guys!I am from BITS-Pilani and i really learned a lot abut ISM by just stepping into your site by chance...You all sure have a legacy just like all the other premier instis... But lemme tell you one thing-Please stop saying anything without prior knowledge...BITS never promotes itself in the media! How many of you have ever come across any advertisement of BITS like the ones printed by crappy instis like VIT,IIIT and all...Great engineers are always humble and respectful and please try to be one to atleast in front of people who also come from colleges which have a standing legacy and pedagogy...BITS hostels are much better than IIT's(Delhi,madras,roorkee are the ones i know of)...dunno about ISM coz i have not had the privilege of coming over there...As far as the highest salary is concerned,lemme tell you that all the premier colleges(IIT,BITS and ISM,maybe even IT-BHU) have almost the same(ours was 47 odd)...Its the number of people who get that which matters and BITS has consistenty had more than 7 students/year in Schlum...This info was not for comparison but just for your information...I really respect your college and i expect the same from you...Take care...

Mr. anonymous
applied geophysics and geology are the two branches which are actually called the earth sciences for which ISM is famous for....these branches offer degrees like Msc and Msc-tech...don't worry about the placements as ISMites from these branches are always in demand all over the world...i guess companies like SHELL and SCHLUMBERGER recruite ppl from these branches as these branches have very less intake....less students produced each year...hence the demand

Great blog. Thanks for the enlightenment.

sir i think you have emphasized much on earth sciences rather on overall approach ism needs and moreover ism do require iit tag as it is the name that matters. Outside india no1 will know ism but they will definitely respect iit dhanbad. and what has been done in year 2000 by our respected seniors was a mistake. ISM should have been given iit tag. it would have been a tag but it would have definitely improved the quality of teachers. this you cant understand because you haven't seen the status of teaching staff in the new departments. CSE department needs some good teachers not like hari om and sachin tripathi. They all are a piece of shit. None of them can teach well.

Dude, I can see that you love the college. I do too. But tone down the hype a little if you are looking for credibility. Perhaps a more sober them for starters and then a more proffesional looking font. Simple, subtle things but they make a lot of difference.
You may profess you personal love for the college in a different context, but when you are aiming to provide useful information, try to be neutral.

Just my thoughts.

Manj said...

@KR

dude i respect your thoughts !!! Things may seem a little hyped for you maybe coz of your college background or maybe the college turned out to be more than what you had imagined of it...nobody is to be blamed, i have drafted what is true and i am noway at profit by writing anything dubious. as far as highlighting some stats and words will cause no trouble to any readers but in fact help em' out to lure some key info.
as far as the neutrality is concerned i dont find a single statement which causes worries for anyone out here !!!
thanx for your suggestion and more suggestions are welcome, no hard feelings please, i just don't need to justify myself

could you throw some light on the MSc applied physics,and Chemistry seats.It may not be really for a JEE qualified candidate to opt for an MSc.Why should they not opt for a B.Tech elsewhere

im really sorry for the late reply as i was busy with my project.Dude whatever sector you enter you gotta work hard, and dont be afraid of mines and all coz ur not going in with shovels, you may just enter once in a while for inspection.But yes. ur job location may not be your favorite place in the world. AN as far as environmental engg is concerned, its got a very good scope and is one of the fields of demand in the near future.

I know you are on a high after achieving whatever you did, but mind your language when you post anything, and think before you type anything. I am not here to market my college, and "I DONT NEED TO PROVE THAT ITS BETTER" than any college. And none of your questions are sensible to the best of my knowledge and you can find that out on the web-site.Dude i feel you need to grow up, which i'm sure you will once you get here.
and i apologize for this irate reply and i advice the further posts to be posted with some inte llection.

@anil

congrats!! yes there is a scope for a branch change but its damn tough my dear. Its usually the top 5 of the lot who literally make it. So better come with the feeling that u have to contibue with ur EE and if u get a branch change then well and good, otherwise whatever u have is good.

I m getting environmental engg. btech in ismu . Though i m sure about ismu being reputed and one of the institutes in india , i m not able to decide as very anxious about placements and prospects of the mentioned branch ??? Plz reply it will really kind of you and highly valueable .

@Dolly

Environmental engg as i said before is one of the hottest branches now. Very few college(just a couple) give Env. engg, so they are in demand and will be in demand for most obvious reasons concerning the world.Yes, its been just two years of it in ISMU, but there is no doubt about the expected splendid placements.Moreover ISMU's centre of mining and environment is a reputed environmental centre all over the world, so do not hesitate about the prospects.All the best!!

Mr.Manjunath,I saw this notice in ism website saying that 4 boys were expelled for ragging........???
I am concerned.Is ragging a serious issue in ISM.....does it go out of hand to the extend of expulsion?????
I want an answer soon coz Iam leaving for Dhanbad on the 17th july.......

Anonymous said...

and about the first replay regarding branch change........u told that its usually the top 5............did u mean the top 5 in the branch or the top 5 in the whole of ISM in the first 2 semisters.........

Manj said...

Dude if i say there is ragging, will it keep you from coming to ISM or will it keep you from going to any other college.Yes, the fact is true, they were expelled and it was all misunderstanding and yes, they are even back now coz they never really did anything worth that severe punishment. Ragging is a part and parcel of college life which i bet you will enjoy, just grow up and think about better issues.
abt 10 ppl out of batch of 450 got a branch change in my year.

Hi

I am Shubham Sharma from Lucknow
I have secured 4501 in JEE 2010.
I am getting petroleum engg.(S032) 4 Yr. B.tech course in ISM Dhanbad.
I was sure of getting Civil or Chem in BHU acc to last yr stats but unfortunately missed it. I was very eager to go to BHU but this blog has changed my mind.
But I am afraid of one thing COLOUR BLINDNESS. Is this really an issue.I haven't got it checked until now.Plz tell me what kind of test do the ISM people take for this and if i will have it then what will happen.
also plz tell above this i have filled bhu civil and chem so should i go for second allotment or accept this branch.
is bhu chem better
also i am afraid about the course i have no knowledge about this branch
i just filled it as a formality as i was sure of getting bhu
i am bent on going bhu becoz its going to have an iit tag and it is nearer to lucknow

plz also guide me abt the course structure of petro.

Is the course really tough or normal and also abt the options to give IES exam OR civil services exam once i do this course i have a lot more to ask
PLz reply soon

I qaulified JEE this year , and ISM dhanbad seems to be a practical option for my rank (6k).
I am looking at mining machinery Engg or Mathematics and Computing 5 year MSc. Which one is a better prospect assuming that i might do better in Math and Comp?

Archit said...

And is mining machinery Engg a course heavily based on field work? I mean,is the geographical domain of employment opportunities restricted to those areas with active mines?

Manj said...

Sorry People, I have been very very occupied with my work. I want volunteers from the present 2nd year to help these kids out.

Manj said...

@Archit, MME and M&C are two disciplines completely different from each other. Taking the placements into prospect(If that is what you are looking for), go for MME. MME is not totally greasy, you can head out for sales, marketing, R&D , and many other options. Remember you'll always be in demand!!!

Manj said...

@Souvik you're asking me to do a very very big job. Contact the present batches on Facebook and find out!!! And for the future, placement related information can be lured from www.ismdhanbad.ac.in and www.gplassets.com (A venture by ISM alumni).

Dear, what about ragging in your college.I think this shameful act is at higher position in ISM as compare to any other IITs.Even final year students have interest in it.Ruthless thrashing and forced alcoholism thru the night (those who resist are made nude and alcohol is poured in what not, even cigarettes are forced). All this is well under the knowledge of the hostel warden.
